Q & A: TEACHING METHOD

October 18, 2021 in q&a, guitar and piano, music lessons, singing and vocal, sound workshops

Question:

Hi Jacinta,

What can I expect in a lesson?

Answer:

My teaching method works in two streams.

Stream one: free-flowing improvisation and exploration of sound

In this stream, I use a practice of three awareness to anchor into life and the voice. I use meditations, visualisations, melodies and call & response to open one to the wonder of their natural voice.

We need freedom of expression and improvisation to experience boundlessness and unseen potential. To unlock the unknown and free the voice without constraints. This free-flowing improvisation allows students to open themselves up to emotions and memories stored in the body, revealing what they have hidden. The space I hold invites students to express these raw, vulnerable, and honest emotions and sounds in a safe environment. Liberating the body, mind and spirit, so the unknown parts of themselves can become known and heard.

Stream two: imprint, release and technique

We will explore;

  • Vocal health

  •
Anatomy of the instrument and how it works

  •
Breathing Anatomy and Exercises; finding the most natural and relaxed way

  •
Physical exercises; releasing tension in the face, neck, jaw, tongue, and other body parts

  •
Vocal imprints or scales; sharpening your pitch, vocal coordination, dynamics and understanding your vocal registers

  •
Vowels and Articulation

  •
Rhythm

  •
Songs

  •
Harmonies

Imprinting the body with patterns and rhythms is very important. It creates new neural pathways, balances both sides of the brain and gifts us with finding harmony and unity in the mind and body. Learning patterns and imprints (scales) allows us to play our instrument, sing in tune, explore harmonies, timber and colours, and be conscious of how and what we are creating. Releasing tension in the body is key to having a free-flowing voice. If we hold patterns of tension in the body, usually due to fear or stress, we tighten the body, which restricts the flow of breath and resonance.

Bringing them together

I weave both of these streams together so they can support each other when singing and making music. We need both in life like we need all polarities. Unification is the key! When we bring these two streams together, the teachings become therapeutic in their quality, and magic occurs!

Music requires a lot of practice, patience and much kindness. I can only take someone as far as they are willing to go. If they practice consistently, the teachings will arise beautifully, and one's inner wisdom will become clear. We are planting seeds and tending to the garden so that the future us blossoms; grounded, inspired and free!
